Bob Chapek and John Paulson are American business figures with different professional backgrounds: Chapek is a former Disney chief executive, while Paulson founded the investment firm Paulson & Co. The reliable sources reviewed for this article do not establish a direct business partnership between them.
Their careers offer a useful comparison between managing an entertainment company and managing investments. Chapek rose through Disney’s operating businesses; Paulson built his reputation by identifying opportunities in financial markets.
Bob Chapek’s career at Disney
Chapek joined The Walt Disney Company in 1993. Before becoming chief executive, he held senior roles in film distribution, home entertainment, consumer products and theme parks.
He led Disney Consumer Products from 2011 to 2015, then became chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. In 2018, he took charge of the expanded Disney Parks, Experiences and Products division.
Disney appointed Chapek chief executive on February 25, 2020. His appointment followed 27 years at the company, giving him extensive experience across several of its major businesses.
His tenure coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic. When Disney announced his departure on November 20, 2022, its board acknowledged his work navigating the company through that disruption. Bob Iger returned as chief executive, ending Chapek’s time in the role after less than three years.
John Paulson’s investment career
John Paulson founded Paulson & Co. in 1994 after working in consulting and finance. His earlier employers included Boston Consulting Group, Bear Stearns and Gruss Partners.
Paulson became widely known for investments that profited from the deterioration of the US subprime mortgage market in 2007. Subprime mortgages are loans made to borrowers with weaker credit histories.
In a 2018 Harvard Business School profile, Paulson explained that he began researching mortgage bonds in 2005. He identified worsening lending quality and positioned his firm to benefit when the market weakened.
His firm’s structure later changed. In July 2020, Reuters reported that Paulson had told investors Paulson & Co. would return external investor capital and become a private investment office. That distinction matters: a family office manages private wealth rather than operating as a fund for outside clients.

Chapek’s role involved overseeing Disney’s business divisions and corporate functions. Decisions about entertainment operations, products and customer experiences were central to his responsibilities.
Paulson’s work centred on selecting investments and assessing financial risk. His mortgage-market strategy illustrates how an investor can profit from falling asset values, while his earlier work included investments involving mergers and bankruptcies.
The clearest distinction is their professional role: Chapek managed the operations of a large entertainment company; Paulson built a firm around investment decisions.
