Footwear is one of the most popular ecommerce categories. However, it’s also one of the hardest to do right. If you want to sell shoes online successfully, you need to pay attention to the details, especially the ones regarding sizing, photos and returns. It is impossible to recreate an in-person shopping experience on the internet, but you have to do anything you can to eliminate confusion and accelerate the decision-making process. Learn how to do it.

Keep sizing clear and precise

One of the biggest barriers to buying footwear online is uncertainty about fit. A customer may know they normally wear a certain size, but sizing can vary between brands, models and even markets.

That is why a shoe listing should provide the following:

· the brand’s stated size system,

· the equivalent size where relevant,

· any additional measurements available (such as insole length).

It is also worth describing the fit itself. Is the model narrow, wide, true to size, or designed with extra room? Customer reviews can also be extremely valuable in this regard. A short questionnaire sent to buyers could help estimate the actual fit and reduce uncertainty for future customers. This benefits not only the buyer but also the seller – the easier it is for customers to understand how a pair is likely to fit, the lower the risk of hesitation and returns.

Photos should be more than pretty pictures

The whole clothing and accessories sector in ecommerce relies heavily on visual aids. Photography is an important part of the product information. A customer first sees the product – only then may they look for more information in the description or specifications.

A strong listing should show the shoes from several angles: both sides, the front, the back, the top and the soles. Close-ups are especially important for details that affect the buying decision, such as materials, stitching, logos, fastenings, texture or, in case of used items, signs of wear. For second-hand shoes, transparency matters even more. Any scratches, creasing, discolouration or damage should be clearly visible and mentioned in the description. Hiding imperfections rarely helps in the long run. Instead, it increases the risk of disappointment and returns.

Consistency also improves the shopping experience. Use a clean background, sufficient lighting and similar framing across all listings. Customers should be able to compare items quickly without trying to interpret shadows or overly edited images.

Make returns easy = instill trust

Buyers know that honest sellers are not afraid of returns, as they are an inherent part of shopping online. If they are unsure whether they will be able to return the item, they may simply choose another seller. Therefore, a clear returns policy can help increase conversions, even if it seems counterintuitive. You should make your policies straightforward and easily available on the website. Remember to clearly state the rules regarding:

· the timeframe in which a return can be made,

· the condition in which the item needs to be returned,

· the method for returning the item,

· the costs of returns (who bears them: the seller or the buyer),

· the rules for complaints regarding incorrect or damaged items.

A transparent policy reinforces trust and confidence. If you want to see more orders, don’t try to avoid the subject or conceal information in complicated wording.

What really drives online shoe sales?

Selling shoes online is often a game of reducing friction. Before publishing a listing, check it from the customer’s perspective. Are the exact size and fit clear? Can they see the condition without zooming in? Do they know what material the shoes are made from? Is anything important missing from the description? Are delivery and returns explained clearly?

You don’t always win with the lowest price. Customers are aware that choosing the cheapest option may cost them more in the long run. Even with higher prices, you can still learn how to sell shoes online successfully – just make sure to make the process transparent, easy and secure. Make sure the visuals are on point and every possible question is answered either by the photos or in the description. Include detailed information about the size and fit and let the customers know they can always return an item that doesn’t meet their expectations. That is how you create a winning shoe listing!
